Cooperation with VARIODRIVE

With our in-depth expertise and experience with servo systems, we support machine builders in the broadest sense of the word. During the concept development stage, we think along with you, about the technical and economic factors so that the final solution also makes commercial sense. We then take care of component selection, the actual implementation and testing of the system.

Thanks to our 100% system guarantee, the customer can be confident that the system works and will continue to work.

The setup of an electromechanical servo system

A general, generic construction of an electromechanical servo system requires a number of physical components. The required components can be constructed and combined in different ways. We distinguish the following components within a servo system:

  • The electromechanical actuator;
  • The servo motor;
  • The reduction gear;
  • The servo drive;
  • The motion control system.

Electromechanical actuator

An electromechanical actuator is a component of a servo system that creates linear or rotary mechanical motion. To achieve this motion, a rotary servo motor can be used where the rotary motion is converted to linear or rotary mechanical motion via a spindle or toothed belt. There are also electromechanical actuators with an integrated servo motor for high-precision applications.

An electromechanical actuator can be used in a wide range of applications, from robotics and industrial automation to transportation and aerospace.

The servo motor

A servo motor is an electric motor that converts electrical power into mechanical power. A servo motor is often used in dynamic systems where fast movements must be realized and/or precise positioning must be achieved. There are different types of servo motors. In terms of mechanics, there are servo motors that make a rotational or a linear motion.

The reduction gear

A planetary gearbox or reduction gear reduces the output speed of the rotary servo motor and increases the output torque of the servo motor. Important characteristics of a gearbox for use in a servo system are: high dynamic range, high efficiency, low backlash and low inertia. Because of these requirements, the planetary gearbox type is mainly used in servo systems.

The servo drive

The servo drive is an electronic device that ensures that, based on a reference signal, the correct current and voltage is supplied to the servo motor so that it moves at the correct speed and to the desired position. Servo drives are available in various design, voltage and current values and can perform position, speed and torque control. A wide range of servo motor types can be controlled using servo drives, including AC, DC, brush, brushless, rotary or linear servo motors. In addition, the servo drive has an overload protection system for the servo motor and servo drive.

The motion control system

Motion control is the controlled movement of an object. To achieve this, quantities such as speed, acceleration and position are important. A motion control system consists of various components that ensure that the correct movements are controlled within the set accuracies. An important part of a motion control system is the automation system with the necessary control options. The field of motion control is VARIODRIVE’s specialty. We design, program, deliver and support with our knowledge and expertise all possible motion control applications.
